We are working with the Geospatial Commission and their supplier Atkins to deliver the London regional platform of the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), a digital map of underground infrastructure assets.

NUAR forms part of the Government’s efforts to build back better and greener, with tangible benefits, and speed up the delivery of housing and infrastructure projects from design to build. Fast access to this data will save utilities companies and local authorities time and money, and reduce the disruption caused in trying to fix leaks and put in new infrastructure.

The NUAR platform will allow participating users to log in securely and view a combined map of all buried assets available at a requested site. This includes:

  • Water and sewer pipes
  • Gas pipes
  • Electricity cables including scanned schematics and cross sections
  • Telecoms cables and ducts
  • Above-ground furniture (streetlights, traffic signals, illuminated signs)
  • In-ground furniture (gullies, pipelines, manhole covers)
  • Transport and local authority assets and private network assets
  • Planning considerations (archaeological sites, Section 50, conservation areas, Tree Preservation Orders)

What's Next

Following a successful pilot phase, NUAR is now a core part of the Geospatial Commission’s strategy – it is a commitment in the National Infrastructure Strategy as well as the National Data Strategy.

City Hall will continue to work with the Geospatial Commission, utilities and local authorities to deliver NUAR in London. The system will also be deployed in the North East of England and Wales before it is rolled out to the remaining regions in England and to Northern Ireland by 2024.

We are keen to reach all local authorities across London, as well as independent network and distribution providers and district heating operators to gain a deeper understanding of their data and willingness to participate in the current stage of work.

If you are an asset owner in London and would like to find out more about NUAR, or if you have any other queries please email [email protected].
