As MPs debate knife crime in Parliament the Mayor has repeated his call for the Government to end police cuts that threaten Londoners' safety.
Knife crime in London has been rising for several years, and 1,844 Londoners under 25 were injured last year. The Mayor believes that every death on the streets is a tragedy. To help address this issue, he has launched a tough new knife crime strategy.
It includes work to help communities tackle this problem as well as more enforcement to get weapons off our streets. He also wants action to crack down on online videos that glamorise and encourage violence.
The Mayor believes, however, that without an end to police budget cuts it will be difficult to achieve his ambitions.
He said, “We desperately need the government to reverse the real-terms cuts to police budgets and youth services that are threatening the safety of our city and putting young people at risk.
If Ministers do not act now, we will be left with no choice but to further reduce officer numbers just as we need them most.”
