The VRU has communities at its heart. Everything the VRU does should be rooted in the community and shaped by the experiences and expertise of its people.

Why VRU communities are crucial to our work

The causes of violence are deep-rooted and complex. To begin to address some of these challenges it is crucial that the work of the VRU must not simply be business as usual. Equally, it shouldn't reinvent the wheel.

We'll work closely with a wide range of partners, including community groups and grassroots organisations, whose work spans a range of issues from youth violence to social exclusion. They understand better than anyone what is driving violence in our city and they are already working hard to address it.

We are clear that we need to involve individuals, members of the community and young people experiencing some of the day to day challenges we hope to address. Their voices are crucial to the VRU's work and they will be involved at every stage and in all key decisions.

VRU community meetings

A Violence Reduction Unit community involvement meeting was held on 14 January 2019.

The purpose of this event was to discuss how the community should be involved and what community involvement should be within the Mayor's Violence Reduction Unit.

You can read a summary of feedback and key themes discussed at the event and also the VRU's next steps.

Toolkit to support community safety partnerships

The VRU has produced a serious incident toolkit, which has been designed in collaboration with community safety partnerships across London.

This provides tools, resources, and guidance to support those responding to an incident of serious violence, and is specifically aimed at community safety partnerships.

Get involved and support the VRU

One of the VRU's early tasks will be to undertake a needs assessment to shape its priorities. Do you have any work or examples of community views on the issue of violence in London that you can share? If so, please email [email protected].
