A new creative hub for Wood Street, Waltham Forest
More creative space is needed in Waltham Forest
There is a real need for affordable artist space in London. Currently 300 artist studio buildings are catering for 11,500 artists. As studio space vanishes and rents increase, urban areas will lose artists and artwork, taking creativity out of our neighbourhoods.
Waltham Forest has only 70 studios. In comparison, the neighbouring Borough of Hackney has 1,124.
The Wood Street Walls community art initiative wants to bring more creativity to Waltham Forest’s local streets and spaces.
Improving Wood Street
The Wood Street Walls community art initiative has reached its funding target to create a brand new studio and community space for local artists and residents to enjoy.
The project aims to bring character and creativity to its local community. By reviving a disused public building – the Manual Instruction Centre in Brooke Road – they will give local art a permanent home in Wood Street. This will allow the artistic community to transform local spaces.
What will this creative hub do?
A new creative hub in Wood Street will aim to:
- regenerate the Manual Instruction Centre, providing a studio space for local artists
- bring old walls and spaces to life
- give children and young adults the opportunity to learn from artists
- provide local, up and coming artists with an affordable space to hone their craft and showcase their work
- work with local business to brighten up their buildings and provide original artwork for shops, leading to extra income for artists
- become an established and integral part of the E17 Art Trail
